Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) is an advanced, non-invasive imaging technique used to examine muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other soft-tissue structures. It provides real-time images, allowing structures to be assessed both at rest and during movement.
MSKUS uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of musculoskeletal structures. Unlike imaging methods that provide mainly static views, ultrasound allows clinicians to observe how tissues respond and move during functional activities.
It can provide valuable information to support the assessment of pain, injury, inflammation, and soft-tissue abnormalities.
Observe muscles, tendons, and other structures while they are moving.
Uses sound waves rather than ionizing radiation.
A comfortable imaging procedure performed externally on the area being assessed.
Allows targeted examination of the specific area associated with your symptoms.
Helps assess how tissues behave during movement rather than only at rest.
Imaging findings can provide useful information alongside your clinical assessment.
01 — Clinical Assessment
The area of concern and your symptoms are reviewed.
02 — Ultrasound Examination
A handheld ultrasound probe is gently moved over the targeted area.
03 — Dynamic Assessment
The tissues may be observed during specific movements when appropriate.
04 — Clinical Interpretation
The findings are considered together with your symptoms and physical examination.
